M.A. Exercise and Nutrition Science
ACE, AFAA, Pilates Certified
Melanie is a San Diego native. She attended University of San Diego High School and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. After college she completed fitness certifications in group exercise, personal training and nutrition counseling. For three years prior to graduate school, she worked in many health clubs in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Hawaii teaching exercise classes, personal training, and serving as a nutrition counselor. In 1998, Melanie received her Master’s degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science from San Diego State University. In graduate school she taught a variety of fitness activity classes in the Exercise Science department.
In 1999, she was hired as a full-time instructor at Southwestern College in the school of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics. She teaches a variety of classes each semester such as Kinesiology, Techniques of Teaching Group Exercise, Health, Step Training, Kick-boxing, Body Sculpting, and Running. In addition to teaching at Southwestern College, Melanie is coordinating and developing the Pilates program at Fitness Quest 10. In 1998, Melanie first began practicing Pilates as a way to balance her physically active teaching schedule with a mind/body discipline. Because Pilates is designed to strengthen and lengthen the muscles and help reduce the risk of injury, it fits in perfectly with her other high impact exercises. Pilates has helped strengthen her back and feet, both of which were chronically susceptible to injuries.
In 1999, she began studying with Kathy Corey who teaches the Ron Fletcher Pilates work and Elizabeth Larkam. She has completed instructor-training workshops in Pilates Mat work as well as Pilates equipment. She completed a one-year comprehensive Pilates certification in the Fall of 2000. Melanie teaches Pilates mat classes for Todd Durkin Enterprises throughout the country at corporate meetings, conferences, and conventions.
