What is a deep tissue massage?
A deep tissue massage is exactly what the name implies. In these sessions we work to access the deeper layers of fascia beyond the superficial layers of the body. We look to affect a change in the muscles, tendons and connective tissue of the body by using more aggressive techniques to reach the deeper structural level of the body.
Deep tissue massage works to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body. By using slow strokes and deep finger pressure on contracted tissue we are able to break up adhesions and scar tissue. This type of massage may cause some soreness during or right after the massage, similar to a good workout in the gym, but should only last for a day or so and is well worth the results you’ll receive.
What are the benefits of therapeutic massage and bodywork?
Therapeutic massage and bodywork can:
- Improve circulation
- Help to loosen contracted muscles and stimulate weak muscles
- Reduce mental and physical fatigue
- Reduce stress and aid in relaxation
- Help to prevent and relieve pain from injuries and muscle spasm
- Promote faster healing
- Improve flexibility
- Promote deeper and easier breathing
- Improve posture
- Strengthen the immune system
- Foster peace-of-mind and a feeling of well-being
- Promote mental alertness
- Promote circulation and movement of toxins
What is your “signature” massage?
Our therapists are all trained in our signature style of therapy – Optimal Performance Bodywork (OPB). This is a style of treatment that owner and founder of FQ10, Todd Durkin, created in 2001 after he blended many of the healing modalities that helped him overcome 3 herniated discs in his back, get off 9 months of Vicadin, and restore his health. OPB integrates specific bodywork and flexibility techniques to help realign fascia, improve neuromuscular re-education, and release tightened soft tissue. We also provide specific stretching and strengthening homework exercises as part of your routine also. OPB is an excellent form of bodywork for every client and especially athletes as it helps to develop the maximal balance of your body.
Who can benefit from receiving massage and therapeutic bodywork?
Individuals from all walks of life can enjoy the benefits of massage therapy and bodywork. Here at Fitness Quest 10, we work on everyone: elite athletes, stay-at-home moms, stressed executives, physical laborers . . . you name it!
Massage therapy and bodywork may be what you’re looking for to help alleviate pain, maintain your health or to make you stronger and well-balanced.
When is massage or therapeutic bodywork NOT recommended?
There are specific situations where massage and bodywork are not advised, including, but not limited to broken bones, recent surgery, inflammation of the skin, varicose veins, open wounds, acute infectious diseases, acute pain, fever and blood clots, to name a few. It is important that the client inform the practitioner of their current health status and of any changes from visit to visit. With many of these conditions, massage can still be applied to other areas of the body as long as treatment to the affected area is avoided.
Are the therapists at Fitness Quest 10 certified and licensed?
Absolutely. All of our therapists are licensed by the City of San Diego and are also nationally certified by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB). It is of the utmost importance at Fitness Quest 10 to provide you with skilled and licensed practitioners. In addition, our therapists participate in continuing education courses on a regular basis to renew and expand their skills.
Do you offer massage for companies or special events?
Yes. We can arrange to have therapists provide services to your company or at your event. To make arrangements please contact us at 858-271-1171.
What is the difference between a relaxation massage and a therapeutic massage?
The difference between these two types of massage is that relaxation massage is intended to relax and sooth the client’s whole being rather than treat a particular condition. Relaxation massage often includes more soothing strokes that help to ease the nervous system and provide an overall sense of calm. Therapeutic massage, like that of deep tissue, is intended to affect the function and structure of the body and will focus more on particular conditions and areas of the body.
What makes Fitness Quest 10 massage different than other places that offer massage?
At Fitness Quest 10 we pride ourselves in offering the best bodywork and sports massage in the country. In 2005, we were voted by Men’s Health as the “Best Sports Massage in the U.S.”
Owner Todd Durkin hires and trains only experienced and highly skilled practitioners who have spent years in the industry. At Fitness Quest 10 you will receive only the best treatment and will feel like you’ve been treated with care and respect. We take pride in our performance and you getting results.
Do you offer any other services beside massage therapy?
Yes. Here at Fitness Quest 10 we believe that the key to heath and wellness is to balance the body through physical fitness, stress reduction and good nutrition. In addition to massage, we offer several ways to achieve this balance, including personal training, sports conditioning, yoga, Pilates, nutritional counseling and group classes and training sessions. FQ10 provides services for all aspects of your health, fitness and well-being in a single location.
Can massage help me with chronic pain that I have had for years?
Therapeutic and deep tissue massage and bodywork can not only relieve acute symptoms but can also affect a change in chronic pain that you may have been experiencing on and off for years. In some cases, massage is the most beneficial tool used to deal with these ongoing discomforts.
As with anything, it may take several sessions to relieve symptoms of chronic pain. You didn’t develop these pains overnight, so they may take more than one session to relieve. As you begin to treat your condition, it may be important to come several times before you can transition to a less frequent schedule for health maintenance.
Please be sure to share specifics with your massage therapist to develop the best plan for you.
Massage therapy is particularly effective in treating the chronic pains experienced as a result of fibromyalgia, and job related discomforts (i.e. working at a computer, sitting or standing for long periods of time). Our expert therapists are trained to facilitate your healing process and look forward to ridding your body of pain and restoring your body to health.
Can massage help reduce high blood pressure?
Massage by its nature has the tendency to relax the body and calm the nerves. One of the most prevalent causes of high blood pressure in the body is stress. Massage therapy can certainly work to reduce this stress thereby leading to a healthier outlook and potentially a reduction in blood pressure. However, it is very important that you inform your therapist if you have high blood pressure and if you are on medication to control your condition.
Do I need to fill out any paperwork?
If you are coming for your first session, you will need to fill out a brief health history form so that our therapists can best assess and treat you during your session. Please try to come 10 minutes early for your first session to allow time to fill out the brief form and to allow your mind and body to begin relaxing.
When are you open for massage services?
Fitness Quest 10 has massage therapists available seven days a week to meet your busy lifestyle. We offer massage Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
How far in advance do I need to make an appointment?
With a highly skilled and sought-after staff, we suggest making your massage therapy appointment several days in advance. We have a great team of therapists that are ready to serve you when your appointment is scheduled. Many people that come in regularly even will schedule a standing time so that they are assured of the same day/time every week or month.
Do you take walk-ins or same day appointments?
We have a very busy massage therapy team that will do its best to get you in as soon as we can. We will do our best to accommodate your needs if you are trying to get in the same day that you call.
The best plan is to call a few days in advance to schedule an appointment. If life gets in the way or you feel the onset of stress, pain, or tightness that can be helped from massage, call us right away and we will do our best to get you in as soon as possible.
Do you offer pregnancy massage?
How could we not? Who needs massage therapy more than an expectant mother? With the added stress to both mind and body that a woman experiences during pregnancy, we highly recommend prenatal massage for pregnant mothers-to-be. We have practitioners in our massage therapy staff who have had extensive training in prenatal massage and caring for expectant mothers.
Please make sure you have your doctor’s permission to receive massage and that you let us know you’re pregnant when you call to make an appointment. This allows us to prepare for your session in advance and to pair you with the correct therapist. Don’t forget, dad-to-be may be stressed too, plan ahead and book massages at the same time!
How often should a person get a massage?
This is very individual. Of course it is based on your level of discomfort, the stress in your daily life or if you are seeing one of our therapists to treat a particular condition. If you are trying to relieve a particular condition this may require more sessions in closer succession. On the other hand, if you are generally feeling well and are looking to maintain that good health, we would suggest a maintenance schedule. It is always best to talk to your therapist and get their input, but in general if you are experiencing a lot of tension you may come as often as once or twice a week. On a maintenance schedule, once or twice a month may be sufficient.
Will I be draped during the massage? Do I take off my clothes or leave them on?
Our staff is very skilled at making you feel safe and comfortable. We do offer fully-clothed massage if that is your preference. However, if you wish to receive a more systematic benefit of flushing the toxins from your system and increasing blood flow, we would suggest a session which would provide for this benefit by removing your clothing and being comfortably draped. During any session, of course, you can disrobe to a level that makes you feel at ease.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Absolutely!! Massage is one of the best gifts that you can give to someone important in your life. We sell gift certificates year-round and suggest purchasing a gift for someone you care about for their birthday, anniversary, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s or Father’s Day or any other day of the year. Many people often purchase massage gift certificates for co-workers or employees as rewards for good work, bonuses, or just as a way of saying “thank you.” Helping someone to remember to take care of themselves is often the best gift you can give.
Will your therapists come to my house for a massage?
Yes. We have several therapists who are happy to travel so that you can receive a massage in the comfort of your own home. To find out more about availability and pricing, please contact Fitness Quest 10 at 858-271-1171.
