Barbara Obernesser, a native New Yorker, has an Associates degree in Physical Therapy Assistant. She worked at S.M.A.R.T. Physical Therapy Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation P.T., providing therapeutic exercises, massage, and evaluating data and progress to patients that included accident victims, surgeries, strokes, amputees, and various neuromuscular conditions. Barbara especially enjoyed volunteering with Hippotherapy, a treatment that uses the multidimensional movement of a horse to provide improved balance, posture, mobility, function, and psychological, cognitive and communication functions for specialized populations. Her "hands on" approach to P.T. lead her to open "The Power of Touch” massage practice in 2000 specializing in Medical and Orthopedic massage therapy. She has continued to expand on her repertoire with many other modalities.
Barbara is also a Trager Practitioner. The Trager Approach® is a mind-body approach to movement education. It is a system of gentle rhythmic movement and touch aimed at facilitating deep relaxation, increased physical mobility and promoting the body’s optimal performance.
Barbara is certified in Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, an adaptation of an ancient form of barefoot massage using deep compression effleurage with cream to glide over the body. This therapy has remarkable effects on clients suffering from chronic back pain, stimulates the lymphatic system, and provides deep relaxation while the therapist uses bars over head.
Barbara decided to leave the frigid climate of upstate NY to relocate to sunny, warm southern California in 2005 and began working at Fitness Quest 10 in June of 2006. She combines her physical therapy background with training in several modalities to customize each session to each clients needs. Yoga, meditation, running, cycling, roller-skating, and hiking are activities that she practices to assist her in the ability to provide nurturing touch and emotional connections with her clients. |
